Volunteering at YDHS

Volunteering benefits clients, carers, staff and the community at large.  Research proves that volunteers live happier and healthier lives.

Volunteers support a variety of programs including:

Volunteers are a valuable part of the YDHS community. Volunteers perform a variety of roles in all areas of the health service.

They provide support in a range of ways including as:

  • Drivers and caddies in a variety of programs;
  • Mealtime buddies who provide encouragement and assistance to nursing home residents at meal times;
  • Exercise buddies who assist nursing home residents to perform exercises;
  • Friendly visitors who provide companionship to vulnerable and isolated community members;
  • Volunteers who spend one on one time or help run activities for residents of St Elmo’s Nursing Home, Crossley House Hostel and the Planned Activity Group, Edgar House;
  • Palliative Care providers.

Volunteers at YDHS also undertake a multitude of other roles including gardening, sewing, taking people on outings, running craft groups, offering computer assistance or just providing company. There are always new roles available.

Volunteers must complete an application form and undertake a police check prior to commencement. They are provided with relevant training and staff support. The time and day of volunteering are flexible and based on the volunteer’s interests. No qualifications are necessary – just enthusiasm and time.
